Alexandria swore in Felipe Hernandez Jr. as the city’s new fire chief in a ceremony at City Hall yesterday (Tuesday).
Hernandez, previously the fire chief for the City of Rochester, New York, will lead the Alexandria Fire Department and Emergency Medical Services.

In general, noise levels from National Airport haven’t gotten noticeably louder in recent years, but there are legitimate reasons it has gotten more noticeable for Alexandrians.

Hopinka contributed to the exhibition catalog for Water’s Edge: The Art of Truman Lowe, writing on Lowe’s lasting impact on his work. Hopinka joins the museum for this special after hours event featuring a screening of three of his short video works followed by a discussion with Rebecca Head Trautmann, Assistant Curator of Contemporary Art and exhibition curator, along with art-making activities, and time to enjoy Lowe’s work currently on view. Sky Hopinka has been widely recognized for his experimental short films and photo-based works. A 34-year-old D.C. man was held without bond in the Alexandria jail for 18 days last month for allegedly dropping off a friend at the jail in a stolen car with an illegal firearm.
On June 3, the Alexandria Police Department used a GPS to find a red Ford Mustang with North Carolina license plates parked near the front gate of the William G. Truesdale Adult Detention Center (2001 Mill Road), according to a recently released search warrant affidavit.
Alexandria native Noah Lyles won the 200 meters at the U.S. Olympic Trials on June 29, and will represent the U.S. in that race and the 100 meters in the upcoming Olympic games in Paris, France.
