ABC7 reported that Alexandria animal control is investigating the death of a dog at the PetSmart boarding facility in Potomac Yard (3351 Richmond Highway).

ABC7 said that a man dropped his three-year-old Aussiedoodle — with no history of health problems and a clean checkup just a few weeks earlier — off at Petsmart’s Petshotel before going on a trip to New York. A few days later, the man received a call from a veterinarian that a Petsmart employee dropped the dog off dead.

The man told ABC7 the vet suspected the dog may have had a seizure, which could have been brought on by dehydration, being underfed and being overheated.

The dog’s remains are being sent to an animal lab in Warrenton for a necropsy to determine the cause of death.
