The Fairfax Resolves were a series of radical resolutions drafted in Alexandria in 1774 that laid the foundation that helped steer Virginia toward revolution.
An event later this month in Market Square celebrates the monumental 250th anniversary of the Fairfax Resolves with a marker dedication, music from the United States Army Old Guard Fife and Drum Corps, and reenactors portraying George Washington and George Mason.
The event is scheduled for Thursday, July 18, from 5-7 p.m. at Market Square (301 King Street).
The keynote speaker at the event will be Carly Fiorina, Virginia’s National Honorary Chairperson of the Virginia American Revolution 250 Commission. Fiorina was also the CEO of Hewlett-Packard from 1999-2005, the first woman to lead a Fortune Top-20 company, a candidate in the 2016 Republican Presidential Primary. Fiorina was very briefly the vice-presidential running mate of Ted Cruz for seven days until he suspended his campaign — the main legacy of which was the two of them awkwardly struggling to hold hands.
There will also be a free outdoor exhibit at Carlyle House (121 N Fairfax Street) celebrating the Resolves from Tuesday, July 16, through mid-September and specialty tours throughout the end of July focusing on the main names behind the Resolves.
Gadsby’s Tavern Museum (134 N Royal Street) will be hosting trivia nights and tours related to the Resolves on Saturday, July 20, and Sunday, July 21.
