Damage from a grease fire has shut down the McDonald’s at 121 W. Glebe Road in the city’s Arlandria neighborhood, according to the Alexandria Fire Department.

Walls, ceiling panels, vents and the roof were damaged in the Oct. 18 (Friday) blaze, according to AFD. The fire in the frier area was reported to AFD by an employee at around 7:15 p.m. The fire was contained in about 35 minutes and AFD was on-scene for an hour, according to dispatch reports.

The leaves are falling around Alexandria, and starting today: the city is making the rounds to pick them up.

“The City of Alexandria will begin its annual leaf vacuuming and leaf bag collection program today, October 28,” the city said in a release. “Leaf collection is expected to continue through mid-January.”

Alexandria City Public Schools has taken a step forward in crafting school policy around artificial intelligence.

The district formed an “AI Impact team” earlier this summer, taking a proactive approach to determine how AI can be used to the benefit of the schools, a report said.

Somebody must have said Beetlejuice’s name too many times, because he was all over the 28th annual Del Ray Halloween Parade on Sunday (Oct. 27).

Thousands of costumed heroes, villains and characters paraded down Mount Vernon Avenue. The weather was crisp — about 60 degrees in the sun, and like an early indication of the days to come felt considerably cooler in the shade.

An Alexandria resident, 18-year-old Marlyn Medrano-Ortiz, has been arrested and charged with second-degree murder for a double homicide in Sterling in August.

According to a release from Loudoun Sheriff Mike Chapman, Medrano-Ortiz is charged with the murder of Mijal Conejero-Romera, a 22-year-old woman from Sterling, and Diego Alexander Woollett, a 22-year-old Arlington resident, on August 28.
