The Alexandria City Council is set to hold its Public Hearing Meeting on Saturday, April 26, with a diverse agenda that includes development projects, zoning amendments, and special recognitions.
The meeting begins at 9:30 a.m. in the Council Chamber at 301 King Street and will also be accessible electronically via Zoom and other platforms.
The Action Consent Calendar includes a review of a Special Use Permit for an automobile service station at 4001 Mount Vernon Avenue, assessing its compatibility with other uses and redevelopment in the Arlandria area. The Planning Commission has already recommended approval with a 7-0 vote.
Several ordinances are scheduled for second reading and final passage, including amendments to the city’s sign ordinance, zoning regulations, and a supplemental appropriations ordinance for fiscal year 2025. These items require roll-call votes by the Council.
The public hearing portion of the meeting includes three major development projects:
The Westridge Towns project, located at 126 Longview Drive and 2921 Nob Hill Court, involves rezoning part of the site from R-8 (Residential) to RA (Multi-unit). The proposal includes the construction of one single-unit dwelling and three multi-unit buildings, with requests for additional density and parking modifications. The Planning Commission recommended approval with a 6-1 vote.
The Whitley Phase 2, located at 802 and 808 N. Washington Street, seeks to change the zoning from Commercial Downtown to Commercial Residential Mixed Use in Old Town North. The project proposes a multi-unit dwelling with an increased floor area ratio, bonus density for affordable housing, and reduced parking. It also includes an encroachment request for portions of the building façade and balconies along North Washington Street. The Planning Commission unanimously recommended approval.
The Adams Neighborhood project, located at 1900 N. Beauregard Street, involves a Development Special Use Permit for a multi-unit dwelling with a parking reduction and an encroachment request for a portion of the wall. This project also received unanimous approval from the Planning Commission.
The Council will also consider proposed changes to ordinances governing the Independent Policing Auditor and the Independent Community Policing Review Board.
Special recognitions are planned during the meeting, with proclamations for Autism Acceptance Month and National Arab American Heritage Month.
The meeting agenda includes a potential closed executive session for consultation with legal counsel regarding actual litigation involving an employment matter. This would require a roll-call vote to enter the closed session.
The Council plans to take a lunch break in the middle of the docket “at a reasonable time when the agenda allows for a break,” according to the meeting announcement.
