The holiday shopping season is right around the corner in Alexandria.

On Friday, Nov. 29, more than 50 retailers are participating in the 15th annual Plaid Friday. Alexandria’s alternative to Black Friday asks shoppers to shop at local boutiques for big deals.

“That was fun,” a Patrick Henry seventh grader said this afternoon (Nov. 12) after virtually installing solar panels on the roof of a building.

The student wore an Oculus II headset, and got a chance to see what kind of work she could get paid to do in the real world of the future. It’s the first year of the new Career Investigation course for middle schoolers, and today’s class was observed by Virginia Superintendent of Public Instruction Lisa Coons and Alexandria City Public Schools leadership.

Like a scene from Cobra Kai, local martial artists are getting it on.

On Saturday (Nov. 9), fighters from a number of local martial arts gyms participated in an informal smoker’s kickboxing tournament at Atlas Muay Thai (6301A Richmond Highway).

The Alexandria Police Department apprehended a man wielding a knife and trying to board buses on Duke Street around 11:20 a.m. today.

Scanner traffic indicated the man attempted to a bus at the intersection of Duke Street and Jordan Street. The bus driver reportedly shut the door to keep him from entering the bus. The man reportedly tried to get onto another bus with the knife and the second driver did the same thing.

A Virginia man sentenced to two and a half years in prison last year just got slapped with another four years and three months after police discovered that the man embezzled funds from one job to pay off restitution obligations to a previous employer he embezzled funds from.

John Babsa, a 35-year-old Virginia resident, has been sentenced to serve an additional 4 years and 3 months of active incarceration for two counts of felony embezzlement and one county of felony money laundering.

Alexandria City Council Member Sarah Bagley won the most votes in Tuesday’s election, making her the presumptive vice mayor-elect.

Bagley won a second term, receiving 42,291 votes in Tuesday’s election, just 664 votes more than Council Member John Taylor Chapman, who got the second-most votes with 41,627 votes.
