Alexandria City Council Member Sarah Bagley won the most votes in Tuesday’s election, making her the presumptive vice mayor-elect.

Bagley won a second term, receiving 42,291 votes in Tuesday’s election, just 664 votes more than Council Member John Taylor Chapman, who got the second-most votes with 41,627 votes.

“I’m excited at the opportunity to continue serving Alexandria,” Bagley told ALXnow. “This is a special city where we care deeply for each other and so many people serve our community in so many ways. Each vote that I received in this election is humbling and motivating. I hope to take that motivation, and the confidence people have placed in me, and commit to working hard, studying more, and showing up as often, and as with as much heart as possible, for my community.”

The results with mail-in ballots were officially released on Friday (Nov. 8).

City Council traditionally elects the candidate who received the most votes as vice mayor.

Mayor-elect Alyia Gaskins said that Bagley is a hard worker.

“Her proven leadership shows her commitment to serving our community with her whole heart and getting results,” Gaskins said. “I am excited to continue working with her in her new role and our colleagues to deliver for our residents.”

Bagley is the executive director of D.C.-based nonprofit Chisom Housing Group, managing 20 affordable housing communities in 11 states across the country, although none are in the D.C. Metro area.

A native of Virginia Beach, Bagley received her bachelor’s degree in government from the College of William and Mary and a law degree from the Catholic University of America. She was previously a judicial law clerk for the District Court of Maryland, and an associate civil litigation attorney for numerous area firms. She moved to Alexandria in 2016 after spending 13 years in the District.

The results of the election are below. Provisional ballots still have to be counted and will be published on Nov. 14, according to the city’s registrar Angie Turner.
