The holiday shopping season is right around the corner in Alexandria.

On Friday, Nov. 29, more than 50 retailers are participating in the 15th annual Plaid Friday. Alexandria’s alternative to Black Friday asks shoppers to shop at local boutiques for big deals.

Plaid Friday originated in Oakland, California. Alexandria’s Danielle Romanetti, the owner of fibre space (1319 Prince Street) started the effort in 2009 with a handful of retailers.

Dozens of Alexandria businesses participate in Shop Small Week.

The deals continue on Small Business Saturday, on Saturday, Nov. 30.

Participating local shops include:

  • Bellacara
  • Bloomers
  • Boxwood
  • Era
  • Made in ALX
  • Monday’s Child
  • Pacers Running
  • Penny Post
  • Pink and Brown
  • Pip[pinn Toy Co.
  • Red Barn Mercantile
  • Sarah Campbell

The stores are listed on Visit Alexandria’s website and will open at 6 a.m. the day after Thanksgiving.
