Mike Bostick, the produce manager at Mom’s Organic Market, couldn’t help himself, so he recently yarn bombed the store’s bike racks to look like characters from Star Wars.

“I wanted to do something that was widely known, that people could get right away immediately,” Bostick told ALXnow. “I’m more of a Star Trek fan, but that would be a little too difficult to make.”


Alexandria’s Emergency Operations Center is fully operational through the COVID-19 pandemic, and it’s nearly empty.

Ray Whatley, the city’s acting emergency manager, is operating the EOC with a skeleton crew of four full-time staff in the Public Safety Building at 2003 Mill Road. The EOC remains pivotal during the city’s first bonafide emergency since the facility opened last year.

The Alexandria Courthouse is nearly empty as Commonwealth’s Attorney Bryan Porter leads a skeleton crew through the COVID-19 pandemic.

All jury trials have stopped, multitudes of cases have been continued between 30 and 60 days, and the clerk’s office is doing business by appointment only. In fact, staff at the courthouse said the earliest appointment to view public documents in the clerk’s office is April 26.


Volunteer Alexandria has opened registration for middle and high school students who want to volunteer their time and energy during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The virtual “Breaks With Impact Service Challenge” asks students who wants to make an impact to select issues they care about, developing a plan for a solution to an issue, and raising awareness.


Inova Alexandria Hospital is at the beginning of a surge in COVID-19 cases, and says that hospital staff are acclimating to the new normal and are prepared for the days ahead.

The hospital is at half of its capacity and is currently treating about 60 patients for COVID-19, hospital CEO Dr. Rina Bansal told ALXnow.
