Police shot and killed 61-year-old Paul G. Behan Jr. in the stairwell of his apartment building at 5101 Maris Avenue. Police were responding to a call from a coworker that Behan was armed and suicidal.

Police said Behan had a weapon with him in the stairwell and was shot by officers after he made a threatening action toward police, though interim Alexandria Police Chief Raul Pedroso would not elaborate more on the incident pending investigation.

The victim told police that she was drunk when Lyft driver Ahmad Reshad Nasseri picked her up in his red Toyota Highlander outside a D.C. restaurant on Friday, July 19, according to a recently released search warrant affidavit.

There are around 725 short term rentals operating in Alexandria. There are 460 registered with the city and another 265 are probably unregistered units — either not registered with the city or granted an exemption. That’s 0.88% of the available housing stock, which the report said isn’t enough to affect housing prices.

The Alexandria Police Department identified 61-year-old Paul G. Behan, Jr. as the man who was fatally shot by an officer on Monday night (Aug. 12).

Behan was shot and killed by a police officer after a 35 minute standoff in the stairwell of his apartment building at 5101 Maris Avenue. One of Behan’s coworkers called 911 at around 10:45 p.m. to warn that he’d threatened to shoot himself, and relayed to police that Behan owned at least two guns.


New federal funding could be coming to Alexandria, particularly to programs boosting affordable housing and pre-k programs for low-income families.

The funding is in the Senate’s draft government funding bills, which just passed out of the Senate Appropriations Committee.
