The ye olde Taco Bell Cantina on King Street in the heart of Old Town (417 King Street) is set to get a new upgrade that could be getting a new pickup window for to-go orders.
The new plan proposes to add an aluminum framed “pick-up window” to the front of the store. The proposal is scheduled to head to the Board of Architectural Review on Wednesday, March 5.
The Taco Bell Cantina opened in late 2018 after a somewhat controversial approval process. While some Old Town residents expressed opposition to the Taco Bell for watering down the “unique visitor experience” to Old Town, others on the City Council noted that the Taco Bell Cantina would be open late at night and be accessible for people working late at other restaurants — or City Council members and poor local news reporters leaving meetings late at night.
The staff report stated “no objection” to the proposal:
Staff have no objection to the proposed alterations. The current storefront is elevated and set back from the public right-of-way. The pickup window will be accessible only to pedestrians and will have minimal impact to the existing architectural style of the storefront.
The report did strike down the idea of painting the window a “vibrant shade of purple” that was described in the report as “too intense.”
