☀️ Today’s weather: Expect a mostly sunny day with temperatures reaching near 40 degrees, accompanied by a calm wind turning westward at around 5 mph. As night falls, skies will become mostly clear and temperatures will drop to around 20 degrees, with a northwest wind blowing at 6 to 9 mph.
The big story this week was snow! Alexandria had its first snowstorm of the season earlier this week!
It likely won’t be the last snow of the season, though: there’s more snow forecast to come in tonight (Friday) and early tomorrow, though likely not as much with only a couple inches tonight.
Alexandria likely has a higher-than-average concentration of American history buffs, which means there could be some stiff competition at Port City Brewing Company’s American History Trivia event next week.
The competition is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 16, at Port City Brewing Company (3950 Wheeler Avenue).
A 29-year-old man was sentenced to 53 years in prison for murdering his roommate by shooting him in the head as he left for work in the West End.
Dontae Lashaun Drumgold was convicted in May of first-degree murder and use of a firearm in commission of a murder in the 2022 death of 25-year-old Elijah Williams. On Thursday (Jan. 9), he was sentenced to 60 years for the first degree murder charge, with 10 years suspended, and three years for the use of a firearm charge. After his release he will undergo five years of supervised probation and must exhibit uniform good behavior for 10 years.

For Friday night, snow is likely, mainly after 10pm, resulting in a low around 25 with calm winds. There is a 70% chance of precipitation and new snow accumulations of 1 to 2 inches are possible.
After years in development, plans for a luxury condominium project in Old Town North are heading to the Alexandria Board of Architectural Review.
The BAR will look over the concept review for the proposed The Whitley – Phase 2, a six-story residential development project at 802-808 N. Washington Street on Wednesday, Jan. 15.
Like the discovery of the ships in Old Town years ago, new development on the waterfront has turned up some fascinating local history.
In a release, the Office of Historic Alexandria said archeologists will offer tours of the newly uncovered Alexandria canal lock and basin near the 900 block of N. Pitt Street Old Town North. According to the release, historic maps showed a fourth waterfront lock at the north end of Old Town, part of the Alexandria Canal that opened in 1845 and linked up to the Chesapeake and Ohio (C&O) Canal in Georgetown.

Thursday night will be mostly clear with a low around 17 degrees, and a northwest wind between 10 to 15 mph, with gusts reaching as high as 26 mph.
Alexandria City Public Schools will open with a two-hour delay on Thursday (Jan. 9).
