Woman abducted in luxury Carlyle-area apartment; ex-boyfriend held without bond

A 48-year-old Maryland man is being held without bond after allegedly abducting his ex-girlfriend in her luxury apartment in Alexandria’s Carlyle neighborhood.

The incident occurred on the morning of Jan. 28 (Tuesday) in an apartment in the 800 block of John Carlyle Street. Just after 9:30 a.m., a woman called 911 to report an abduction of her friend by her friend’s ex-boyfriend.

The woman received a text from her friend that “(The suspect) broke into my apt a few hours ago,” according to a recently released search warrant affidavit. “Holding me hostage. Don’t call the cops. He’ll hurt me.”

APD responded to the call, and when they knocked on the apartment door, the victim was heard inside asking, “Who is it?” before screaming, “Help me, please,” and running out the door, leaving the suspect alone inside the apartment.

The victim told police that her ex used a key fob to get into the apartment, and that once inside he threatened and physically assaulted her, according to the search warrant affidavit.

“Additionally, he disallowed (the victim’s) departure and freedom of movement from the apartment, thus abducting her,” police said in the search warrant affidavit.

The victim has two key fobs, one in her possession, and the spare inside of her vehicle, she told police.

Police did not find the spare key fob in her vehicle, leading police to believe that the suspect broke into it. They found that the hood of the car was pried open and that scratch marks were present on the vehicle that hadn’t been noticed by the victim before the incident.

The suspect was arrested and charged with abduction, burglary, violation of a protective order while armed, entering the home of a person with a protective order, wearing a mask to conceal identity, assault, and tampering/breaking into an auto.

The suspect goes to court on April 29.

The Alexandria Sexual Assault Center and Domestic Violence Program is available 24/7 to listen and help at 703-746-4911.

“If you are a neighbor and know that an abusive incident is occurring, call the police immediately,” the city said. “Calling the police is simply the most effective way to protect the victim and children from immediate harm.”
