Two suspects are being held without bond after a man was robbed of his wallet at gunpoint in Old Town last month.

The victim was robbed as he walked near the intersection of Prince and S. Lee Streets in Old Town at around 1:15 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 3.

The victim, who was not injured, told police that he was walking south when two masked men got out of a gray-colored Ford Sedan, one pointed a gun at him and demanded his wallet, according to a recently released search warrant affidavit.

The victim told police that the suspects took $210 from the wallet and threw it out the window as the gray sedan sped away.

APD found video footage of the incident. According to the search warrant affidavit:

The video footage shows the sedan stop in the middle of S. Lee Street. As (the victim) is walking, two subjects exit the vehicle and then approach (the victim). One subject, the driver of the vehicle, wearing all-black clothing, walks up to (the victim) and confronts him. There is a short interaction, then the driver is seen running back to the driver’s seat of the gray Ford Fusion sedan.

The passenger of the vehicle, who exited at approximately the same time as the driver, is seen looking down the street, putting the hood of his sweatshirt on, then start to approach (the victim). The passenger does not walk all the way up to (the victim), he turns around and then looks down the street as if looking for any potential witnesses or vehicles. Once the interaction between the driver and (the victim) is concluded, the passenger runs back to the front passenger door of the vehicle, gets in and leaves with the vehicle.

An investigating APD officer checked license plate reader cameras and found that at the time of the incident a gray Ford Fusion with North Carolina plates was seen traveling south on S. Patrick Street and the intersection with Franklin Street just five minutes after the incident occurred.

“After comparing a photograph of the vehicle in the video surveillance footage with the vehicle observed through the license plate reader camera, the two appeared to be the same, including both having dark-tinted windows, dark gray rims, and having a license plate that is blue and white in color, matching the North Carolina license plate.

APD then sent a BOLO (Be On The Lookout) message to surrounding jurisdictions. At around 4:30 p.m. — three hours after the incident occurred — the Fairfax County Police Department located the car driving away from an apartment building in the 6000 block of Tower Drive, according to the search warrant affidavit.

Police pulled over and arrested 25-year-old Tarik Boyd, of North Carolina, the registered owner of the vehicle, and his passenger, 26-year-old Zaron Laney of Alexandria.

“They both made statements against their penal interest placing themselves at the scene of the robbery and indicating involvement,” police said in the search warrant affidavit.

Boyd was charged with possession of a firearm by a violent felon, use of a firearm in commission of a felony and robbery using a firearm. Laney was charged with using a weapon during a robbery.

The suspects go to court on April 4.
