Men claiming to be volunteers for Republican 8th District candidate Jerry Torres distributed fake sample ballots with the Arlington County Democratic Committee logo at at least one Alexandria polling location today.

The sample ballots — distributed outside of John Adams Elementary School — have all Democratic candidates marked except for Torres in the 8th District race, though Torres said the ballots did not come from his campaign.


About 80% of Alexandria voters are expected to turn out this Election Day, according to the city’s General Registrar and Director of Elections.

Registrar Angie Turner said that 80% of the city’s 99,369 registered voters are expected to vote.

After nearly a year of campaigning, City Council Member Alyia Gaskins said on election day that she’s ready to be the next mayor of Alexandria.

Gaskins won the three-way Democratic primary for mayor in June, and faces no opposition in the general election. She will be the first Black woman elected mayor of the city.

A proposal to add seven new townhomes on Seminary Road is headed to the Planning Commission this week (docket item 9) and has stirred up some controversy in the neighborhood.

The plan by Verity Builders LLC is to build six market-rate townhouses and one affordable townhouse at 5216 Seminary Road. Each home will be three stories plus a roof deck and garage.

Alexandria police discovered a “commercial-grade smoke bomb” while searching a vehicle on King Street in Old Town on Saturday (Nov. 2) afternoon.

At around 1 p.m., an APD officer reported identifying a 30-year-old suspect wanted for felony destruction of property and wearing a mask in public (also a felony).


It was Halloween this week, the best holiday of the year, and Alexandria nailed it like it always does.

Last year, the City of Alexandria officially killed the Taylor Run and Strawberry Run projects. In a newsletter today, Mayor Justin Wilson laid out the path ahead to bringing Alexandria into compliance with the EPA’s Chesapeake Bay pollution restrictions.

Wilson said by 2023, Alexandria had to meet 40% of the EPA’s Total Maximum Daily Load limit — the calculation of how much amount of pollutants can enter a body of water. By 2028, Wilson said Alexandria must meet 100%.
