Walk through Sudan’s tragedy: Massive floor art installation coming to Alexandria

A compelling art exhibit is coming to Old Town on May 10, shedding light on the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Sudan.

“Red-Handed – Sudan: Don’t Turn Away” features a massive 40-by-35-foot floor artwork by South African-born artist Rosemary Feit Covey. The mixed-media piece shows stylized bodies of hundreds of victims with red-painted hands.

You can see the one-day exhibit from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Historic Christ Church Auditorium (118 N. Washington Street). There’s no cost to attend.

American Friends of the Episcopal Church of the Sudans, a group supporting Episcopal churches in South Sudan and Sudan, is organizing the event.

Former U.S. ambassadors and South Sudanese community members will be there to give updates on the situation in Sudan. Visitors can also learn about ways to help.

Keep in mind that the exhibit’s intense images might not be suitable for young children.
