There’s a new indoor gym in Alexandria’s West End dedicated to improving baseball and softball swings.
The Dugout, a 10,000-square-foot facility, recently opened for individual and group training at 315 Hooffs Run Road. It’s owned by Layla Burczak, Lacey Forster, Ben Kelley, Amanda Kelley, Ben Matthews and Katy Matthews — all principals in Alexandria Travel Sports LLC.
The Alexandria Health Department (AHD) warned locals today another West End raccoon has tested positive for rabies.
AHD said a raccoon tested positive near Chambliss Park after an encounter with several dogs near the park.
Alexandria’s Workforce Development Center (4850 Mark Center Drive, 8th floor) is hosting a pop-up event this week helping locals in need access business attire.
The pop-up will offer “gently used professional attire, business casual clothing, and accessories for men and women.”
A planning effort kicking off next year could determine the future of a major transit project in the West End.
Envision Route 7 is an ongoing plan to build a bus rapid transit (BRT) system connecting the Mark Center in Alexandria, through Bailey’s Crossroads and Falls Church, out to Tysons. A woman was uninjured in an attempted abduction Tuesday evening, and the Alexandria Police Department is asking the public for help.
The victim told police that she was able to break away after a man allegedly grabbed her, put his hand over her mouth and nose, and tried to pull her into the Holmes Run Trail at Tarleton Park, according to APD dispatches.

A man was arrested this morning after allegedly breaking into the Wells Fargo Bank in the Shoppes of Foxchase in Alexandria’s West End.
APD was alerted at around 6:20 a.m. of a holdup alarm inside the bank at 4601 Duke Street, which is closed for Columbus Day. Video footage showed a male wearing a beige and orange hoodie and walking back and forth inside the bank, according to dispatch reports.
Francis Deonte Rose was sentenced today to 58 years in prison for the 2022 shooting deaths of two construction workers in the West End.
A jury found Rose guilty in May of killing Adrian Dejesus Rivera Guzman, 48, and his stepson, 24-year-old Juan Carlos Anaya Hernandez, on the morning of July 16, 2022 in the northern section of the former Assembly Alexandria apartment complex in the 200 block of Century Place.
Alexandria’s Fall Festival, complete with kid-friendly games, food trucks and more, will return on Saturday, Oct. 5.
The Fall Festival is hosted by the Department of Community and Human Services and is scheduled to be held outside Southern Towers at 5067 Seminary Road from 10 a.m.-3 p.m.

On Tuesday, the city announced that S&P Global Ratings and Moody’s Investors Service reaffirmed its ‘AAA’ bond rating. The move means that Alexandria can get low-interest rates from bond investors to provide funding for expensive capital improvement projects.
