The Alexandria Police Department has increased its patrols in the West End in an effort to stem a rising tide of violent crimes, illegal drug use and other crimes.

APD announced last week on social media that it is continuing to address “quality-of-life concerns” in the West End with increased patrols in the area. The department also advised residents to call 911 if they see something suspicious, or the APD non-emergency number at 703-746-4444.

No arrest was made after a brandishing incident that allegedly occurred in the West End at around 12:30 p.m.

The victim called 911 and said that a man brandished a handgun as she crossed the street in the 500 block of S. Van Dorn Street, according to Alexandria Police Department dispatches.

A 22-year-old Alexandria man was shot in the chest after pretending to “clear rooms” with what he and his friend thought were his unloaded Glock handguns.

That’s according to a recently released search warrant affidavit detailing the shooting inside an apartment in the 4800 block of Kenmore Avenue on Saturday night, May 11.

A new generation of first-generation Americans is being born primarily in Arlandria and the West End, but a new report said Alexandria doesn’t have the childcare facilities in those neighborhoods to support the children and new parents.

The new Community Needs Assessment, prepared by the Economic Opportunity Commission (EOC) and the Department of Community and Human Services (DCHS), examined issues of housing, employment, and more around Alexandria.  Part of the Assessment examined the accessibility of childcare around the city.

Francis Deonte Rose was found guilty today of two counts of aggravated murder in the 2022 shooting deaths of two construction workers in the West End. The Commonwealth Attorney’s Office is now seeking a life sentence.

After a four-day-long trial, the jury found Rose guilty of two counts of aggravated murder, two counts of use of a firearm in commission of a felony and unlawful entry. He was found not guilty of burglary.

The suspect in a 2022 West End double homicide pleaded not guilty in court Monday morning, and claims that he killed two construction workers in self-defense.

Francis Deonte Rose admits to shooting and killing construction workers Adrian Dejesus Rivera Guzman, 48, and his stepson, 24-year-old Juan Carlos Anaya Hernandez, on the morning of July 16, 2022 in the northern section of the former Assembly Alexandria apartment complex in the 200 block of Century Place.

Alexandria is seeking community feedback on a series of changes to South Pickett Street in the West End, including new pedestrian safety measures and protected bike lanes.

The project would cover S. Pickett Street from Duke Street down to Edsall Road. That route along the West End Village shopping center, Hillwood Condominiums, and ends near Samuel Tucker Elementary School.

A 41-year-old Maryland man is being held without bond after allegedly executing the family dog in a fit of rage, according to a recently released search warrant affidavit.

The incident occurred on Feb. 25 in an apartment in the 4300 block of Raleigh Avenue, which is near the Shoppes of Foxchase on Duke Street.

No arrests were made after a fight resulted in a single shot being fired from a gun in the Lincolnia area of Alexandria on Saturday afternoon, according to the Alexandria Police Department.

APD was notified of the gunshot at around 3:30 p.m. in a parking lot of an apartment complex in the 6100 block of Lincolnia Road. Police were told that multiple males were fighting, and that the fight was broken up when the suspect fired the gun in the air.
