Alexandria’s extended public poll on the Duke Street Land Use Plan wraps today.
Hundreds of people have participated in the poll, according to the city. Once completed, the plan will guide city officials in the development of the Duke Street Corridor from the former Landmark Mall to Alexandria Union Station. The plan is expected to be ready for City Council consideration and adoption in late 2026/early 2027, according to the city.
The poll launched in June and is available in English, Amharic, and Spanish.
What is your hope for the future of Duke Street? Much of what the city is planning will center around the sprawling WestEnd development (opening next year) and the opening of Inova Alexandria Hospital at Landmark in 2028.
According to the city:
The FY 2024-2025 Interdepartmental Long Range Planning Work Program adopted by City Council includes a community planning process to update the comprehensive land use plan for the Duke Street Corridor. Recognizing that the land use concept for this area was last comprehensively updated in 1992, the planning process will engage the community to create a land use vision for the future.
The planning process will explore topics such as land use, environment and climate, equity, mobility and connectivity, pedestrian safety and accessibility, parks and open space, and housing affordability. Translation and interpretation services will be provided throughout the process to ensure that all who wish to participate may do so.
