The Alexandria Police Department has detained a suspect over a robbery that took place this afternoon (Friday) near Potomac Yard.

Police were alerted shortly after 2:30 p.m. that a male suspect in a black ski mask had reportedly walked into a battery store on the 400 block of E. Glebe Road and demanded cash. The suspect had his hands in his pockets, and “a weapon was implied but not seen,” an APD dispatcher said.

The Alexandria Police Department suspects that a man shot in Old Town last month likely accidentally shot himself.

APD responded to the 300 block of N. West Street around 9:45 p.m. Oct. 8, after receiving reports of six to eight shots fired and an 18-year-old male with a gunshot wound to the thigh. Police now suspect the man fired at himself while fleeing the scene, according to a recent search warrant affidavit.

An Alexandria woman was scammed out of thousands of dollars last month in an elaborate scheme by several suspects pretending to be Sheriff’s Office officials.

No arrests have been made in connection with the Oct. 6 incident, in which scammers coerced the victim to deposit $4,600 into a Bitcoin ATM in Arlandria, through a barrage of texts, calls and false documents, according to a recent search warrant affidavit.

More details have been released on the alleged arrest of a Washington, D.C. man facing multiple charges of simulated masturbation and indecent exposure in Del Ray and Old Town.

Marc Christopher Westbrooks, 40, has been held without bond since his August arrest on four misdemeanor counts of indecent exposure and six counts of simulated masturbation with the intent to be seen. He’s being represented by the public defender and goes to court for a jury trial starting on Tuesday, Jan. 20, 2026. The top story this week was on the resignation of all the commissioners overseeing the Alexandria Redevelopment and Housing Authority Board. The crisis began in August when ALXnow first reported that then-ARHA CEO Erik Johnson was living in an ARHA-managed public housing unit. The ARHA board published a statement acknowledging the situation, demanded that he vacate the property, and then terminated his employment in September. In a special meeting on Wednesday, the City Council appointed six new ARHA board members.

No injuries were reported after a male with a knife robbed a West End convenience store of cigarettes on Sunday, October 12

A clerk at the 7-Eleven store at 6120 Linconia Road called police after the incident occurred at around 5:30 a.m., according to Alexandria Police Department radio dispatches. The suspect, who fled the scene on foot, is described as a Black male wearing a red hooded sweatshirt, gray sweatpants, and black shoes.

An instructional assistant at Thomas Edison High School, located at 5801 Franconia Road,  Alexandria (Fairfax County), has been arrested for allegedly sexually assaulting two students.

Derrick Burroughs, a 40-year-old Alexandria man, was arrested after Child Protective Services received two referrals that two students were “inappropriately touched,” according to the Fairfax County Police Department. Burroughs, an instructional assistant with Fairfax County Public Schools since 2023, was transported to the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center and charged with two counts of aggravated sexual battery and indecent liberties by a custodian. He was released after posting a $3,000 bond, according to FCPD.
