From the 100 block down to the waterfront, King Street is a pedestrian zone. Now, that zone could be expanding a little further west to the 200 block of King Street.

The pedestrian-zones are closed to car traffic except where King Street intersects with perpendicular roads like S. Union Street. The closure, which started out in 2020, has since become a permanent feature of the Old Town blocks.

The 700 block of Cameron Street will be closed for part of next week during the day because of construction nearby.

The City of Alexandria said in a release that the 700 block of Cameron Street will be closed from 9 a.m.-3 p.m.

Alexandria is embarking this month on the creation of 15-year plan to tackle affordable housing issues. Once approved, the Housing 2040 Master Plan will give City Council and staff goals, strategies and direction on the city’s housing plans.

Housing affordability and zoning issues have been key issues in the upcoming City Council election on Nov. 5. Alexandria contended with a 62% decline in market-affordable rental units in the city between 2000 and 2021.

Far and away the most read story this week was the car crashing into Inova Alexandria Hospital.

The car crashed into Inova’s visitor entrance early Wednesday afternoon. City inspectors were called out to the site to assess the damage to the building, while “no patient care was needed” as the conveniently close hospital took care of the driver.

Old Town Books Junior recently opened at 130 S. Royal Street, and its owner says that last week’s first story time under the new indoor reading tree was packed.

“It looked like a nightclub for toddlers in here,” store owner Ally Kirkpatrick told us. “We soft-launched last week and had more than 40 families come out for story time.”
