The City of Alexandria is rolling out additional speed safety measures on four key roads this spring in an effort to improve roadway safety.
The city plans to expand its School Zone Speed Camera Safety Program and lower speed limits in certain areas.
New school zone speed cameras are coming to Alexandria City High School’s King Street and Minnie Howard campuses, plus William Ramsay Elementary School.
The City will install additional school zone speed cameras at the following locations:
- Alexandria City High School – King Street Campus (King Street, between Quaker Lane and Scroggins Road)
- Alexandria City High School – Minnie Howard Campus (Braddock Road, between Marlee Way and Marlboro Drive)
- William Ramsay Elementary School (North Beauregard Street, between North Morgan Street and Roanoke Avenue)
City officials say in a press release that they chose these locations based on data, including crash history, traffic levels, vehicle speeds, and the number and age of students in the area.
After a period of testing and driver warnings, the cameras should be up and running by April 2025.
Each school zone will cover about a quarter-mile, with a 15 mph limit when school signs are flashing. The city says there will be clear signs to let drivers know when they’re entering a camera zone.

The city is also planning to lower speed limits from 35 mph to 25 mph on two stretches of road:
- South Pickett Street (Duke Street to Edsall Road)
- Eisenhower Avenue (South Van Dorn Street to Telegraph Road)
These changes are also set for April 2025.
