Alexandria city staff said an expansion of the King Street Pedestrian Zone to the 200 block is feasible and could move forward this fall.

Hillary Orr, deputy director of Transportation Planning and Mobility, said the city worked with the fire department, police department, city attorney and traffic operations to review the proposal.

Alexandria City Manager Jim Parajon has hired Tarrick McGuire as Alexandria’s new police chief.

McGuire, the assistant chief of police in Arlington, Texas, has been with that department since 2003 — just three years before Parajon started working in that city government in 2006. There was no mention of their relationship or knowing each other in the release to the public.

An Alexandria charity has been awarded $1.9 million in federal funds to train behavioral health professionals to work with people suffering from racial disparities, drug addicts, and students with mental health disorders.

The funding was announced today in a joint statement by Virginia’s U.S. Senators Mark Warner and Tim Kaine. It’s part of a $2.2 million package to fund education programs in Alexandria, Richmond and Harrisonburg.

A 29-year-old man has been arrested by US Marshals and charged in a hit-and-run that hospitalized a local teen and caused a lockdown at George Washington Middle School.

29-year-old Zsavon Walters has been charged with malicious wounding and hit and run with a personal injury related to a crash at the corner of Montgomery and N. Patrick Streets on Oct. 4, 2023.

George Mason University is hosting a special discussion tomorrow night with Alexandria’s Mayor Justin Wilson and Arlington County Board Chair Libby Garvey about trends in local governance.

The discussion is being cohosted by Agenda Alexandria and Advance Arlington and moderated by local journalist Michael Lee Pope. The program, titled 21st Century Governing: Are Local Officials In Sync with Constituents?, is scheduled to run from 6:30-9 p.m. at the Arlington campus of George Mason University (3351 Fairfax Drive). A new gallery on display this month at the Del Ray Artisans Gallery (2704 Mount Vernon Avenue) explores the risks and opportunities new technology like machine learning pose for artists.

The exhibit “Artificial or Intelligence?” explores the impact AI trends are having on artists. That impact has, by and large, been almost entirely negative, with image generating software stealing from the work of human artists, but the gallery offers that exhibit viewers should draw their own conclusions.
