A battle over an alleged “purge” of voter rolls is being fought in the U.S. District Court in Alexandria.

AP reported that a coalition of immigrant-rights groups along with the League of Women Voters in Virginia filed a federal lawsuit on Monday accusing Republican Gov. Glenn Youngkin and Attorney General Jason Miyares of a purge of voter rolls that will disenfranchise legitimate voters.

The lawsuit argues an executive order by Youngkin in August that requires daily updates to voter lists to remove ineligible voters violates a federal law that requires a 90-day “quiet period” ahead of elections.

The lawsuit said notices were sent out to 66 voters deemed “likely noncitizens” by a Fairfax County Republican Committee-affiliated “Election Integrity Task Force”. The voters were given 14 days to verify their citizenship before being removed.

Of those, 17 responded and were kept on the rolls, while 49 did not and were removed with their names forwarded to state and local prosecutors for potential legal action.

The lawsuit alleges the voters were improperly removed and asks the state to both restore the voter rolls and bar removing voters under similar purges.

A hearing has not been scheduled yet.
