Del Ray exhibit focuses on ‘possibilities and perils’ of AI for art

A new gallery on display this month at the Del Ray Artisans Gallery (2704 Mount Vernon Avenue) explores the risks and opportunities new technology like machine learning pose for artists.

The exhibit “Artificial or Intelligence?” explores the impact AI trends are having on artists. That impact has, by and large, been almost entirely negative, with image generating software stealing from the work of human artists, but the gallery offers that exhibit viewers should draw their own conclusions.

“Talk about artificial intelligence, or AI, abounds,” the event listing said. “When humans work with AI, is the outcome less than, equal to, or greater than the sum of its parts? Come see the Artificial or Intelligence? art exhibit at Del Ray Artisans gallery as we explore this and other questions.”

The exhibit is scheduled to run through Saturday, Oct. 26. The gallery is free and open to the public, and all artwork in the galley is available for sale.

The Torpedo Factory will also host a discussion about AI and art later this month with the City of Alexandria’s Office of the Arts, Del Ray Artisans, the Patent and Trademark Office, Pantheon AI and more.

AI & Artists: A Discussion On What Artists Should Know” is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 19, from 6:30-8 p.m. at the Torpedo Factory Art Center (105 N. Union Street).
