BREAKING: Incumbents prevail in Democratic City Council primary

The Alexandria City Council incumbents have held onto their nominations in the Democratic primary.

While incumbents John Chapman, Sarah Bagley, Kirk McPike and Canek Aguirre have secured their spots as the Democratic candidates, along with newcomer School Board Member Abdel Elnoubi and School Board Member Jacinta Greene.

Chapman led the group for in-person voting with 11.8% of the vote. Alexandria General Registrar Angie Maniglia-Turner said early votes will be counted before the end of Tuesday night.

City Council Democratic candidates

Four incumbent Council Members are running for reelection. With Wilson’s departure and Jackson and Gaskins running for the open mayor’s seat, there are two vacancies on the six-person City Council. All six spots are up for grabs, and there is a total of 11 Democratic candidates.

The Democrat winners will face Republican Celianna Gunderson and Independent candidate Mason Butler on election day on Nov. 5.
