All Alexandria City Public Schools and offices will open with a two-hour delay tomorrow (Friday) due to the snowy morning forecast.
ACPS announced the district’s first snow-related delay of the season this evening, joining schools in Arlington and Fairfax County. The announcement is available to view on the district’s website.
Firefighters from Alexandria and Arlington recovered a contractor who was unable to exit a sewer while working in Eisenhower East yesterday afternoon (Thursday).
The Alexandria Fire Department’s Engine 205 and Battalion 201 responded to 1500 Eisenhower Avenue to rescue the 32-year-old man, who was reportedly trapped in the sewer, according to city dispatches around 4:15 p.m.
Alexandria historian McArthur Myers died today after a long illness. He was 73.
City leaders remember “Mac” Myers as a kind man with an endless supply of stories who was motivated to keep Alexandria informed of its frequently troubled past. A lifetime resident and Living Legend, Myers was integral in erecting historical signage in and around Alexandria, including markers along the African American Heritage Waterfront Trail.
Snowplows will be roving around Alexandria tomorrow morning (Friday) as part of an annual training exercise.
The “dry run” training is part of the Department of Transportation & Environmental Services’ yearly effort to prepare for winter weather. Residents should expect to see plows and other “winter response vehicles” on the streets, according to a city announcement.
A 27-year-old Fairfax County man is being held without bond and heads to court this month for allegedly robbing a convenience store in Alexandria West.
Darion Hughes, of Annandale, was arrested more than a month after the Oct. 12 incident, which occurred at a store in the 6100 block of Lincolnia Road. The victim told police that a man in a dark red hoodie, tan pants and black shoes, walked behind the counter.

The Planning Commission has given its approval to plans to redevelop an Old Town apartment building with more affordable housing.
The commission gave its blessing last night (Tuesday) to Alfred Street Baptist Church’s proposal to construct a four-story, 145-unit affordable housing complex on the grounds of the 1970s-era Old Towne West building. The current parcels at 901 Wolfe Street and 598 and 601 S. Alfred Street have 77 units, including 34 affordable units and two offices.
Another Alexandria resident has fallen victim to scammers pretending to represent the Sheriff’s Office this fall, according to a recently released search warrant affidavit.
A woman was scammed out of $5,000 following interactions with suspects claiming to represent the Sheriff on Oct. 9, just three days after another resident was scammed out of $4,600 through a similar situation.
In an effort to increase transparency and inform the public, the Alexandria City School Board wants to launch its own website.
The School Board will discuss the development at its meeting tomorrow (Thursday). According to a draft proposal, Board Chair Michelle Rief would designate two board members to be co-editors to manage content, and that all content not republished from the Alexandria City Public Schools website would have to be approved by the school system’s attorney before publication.
After more than four months of delays, the Four Mile Run Kayak Launch is expected to be open for use by the end of this week.
The project promises the “first public ADA-accessible Potomac River paddling access” through a city partnership with the Four Mile Run Conservatory Foundation. The foundation announced the end of construction on social media yesterday (Tuesday) and said there will be a grand opening in the spring.
