The holidays officially brightened up in Alexandria with the annual lighting of the city’s Christmas tree on Saturday night.

Mayor Justin Wilson joked with Santa Claus onstage in front of City Hall (301 King Street) before the official countdown to spark the 40,000 lights on the 40-foot-tall plastic tree.

A new roundabout in Alexandria’s Warwick Village neighborhood has  resulted in a surge of near-miss complaints.

The Alexandria chapter of NoVA Families for Safe Streets saw a surge of reports in its crowd-sourced Near Miss and Dangerous Locations Reporting and Dashboard. The dashboard is intended to identify roadways with high risks for pedestrians.


A crash at the intersection of Potomac Avenue and Richmond Highway had knocked over a traffic signal and reduced traffic on the street to one lane in each direction.

The driver of a white truck struck the pole around 1 p.m.

Clouds will increase, with temperatures near 44°F and winds from the west at 10-15 mph, gusting up to 24 mph. Precipitation chance is 70%, but little to no snow accumulation anticipated. For Friday night, scattered showers are expected before 10pm, followed by gradual clearing and lows around 38°F. West winds will remain at 11-14 mph, gusting up to 24 mph, and precipitation chances are at 40%.


Bark Social, a small chain of dog-friendly bars that bought Barkhaus (529 E. Howell Avenue) last year, has suddenly closed.

Bark Social announced late yesterday that the end of business on Thursday, Nov. 21, would be the chain’s last day.


There’s a lot that people want to see out of the renovations to City Hall and the adjacent Market Square. Fundamentally, though, most respondents to the city’s survey want Market Square to continue operating as a real market.

Market Square regularly hosts activities on the plaza, including the ever popular Old Town Farmers’ Market — the oldest farmers’ market in the country continuously held at the same site.
