Another busy week in Alexandria, one that saw the groundbreaking for the long-awaited replacement of the Landmark Mall site.
Alexandria and Inova leaders met this week for the groundbreaking of Inova Alexandria Hospital. The project, approved last year, will be the centerpiece of a new mixed-use development. The site was once home to Landmark Mall, a thriving commercial center in its heyday, but it decayed dramatically over time when major tenants pulled out. The site briefly received one last moment in the sun as the action centerpiece of a pretty awful Wonder Woman movie.
After a month-long renovation, The Westin Alexandria Old Town has reopened its Trademark Restaurant.
The renovations at 2080 Jamieson Avenue include a standout central bar, a new café space, a semi-private dining room and a dog-friendly street-side patio. There’s also a new menu featuring American and French fare.
Eries Interiors, a new shop focusing on interior design and home decor, is opening today in Old Town.
The new shop is at 101 S. St Asaph Street just south of King Street, between Bluemercury and Madame Coco. The store is named after the Erie Canal near where co-founders Jessica Moak and Elena Rall grew up.

A new head spa just opened on King Street in Old Town.
Meraki Head Spa soft launched last week at 320 King Street. Owner Kathleen Le has held onto the space since moving her beauty parlor Salon Meraki to 1101 Queen Street in 2021, and started renovating the 900 square-foot space in August. She added eight beds, seven staffers, ambient music and turned off the lights.
After lead exposure shut down Naomi L. Brooks Elementary School last week, the Alexandria Health Department (AHD) is offering walk-in blood lead level testing today (Thursday) and tomorrow (Friday).
According to Eve Elliott, communications officer for AHD, testing is being offered today from 1-6 p.m. and Friday from 1-6 p.m. The testing is free and available to all students, staff, faculty and volunteers. The Alexandria Health Department will not check class or faculty lists.
