School Board greenlights renaming process for three ACPS facilities

The Alexandria City School Board has approved starting the naming process for three school facilities.

At its April 3 meeting, the board approved initiating the naming process for the Early Childhood Center courtyard, Naomi L. Brooks Media Center, and Parker-Gray Stadium field.

The names being considered are “Owen’s Place” for the Early Childhood Center courtyard, “Jean B. Reid Library” for the Naomi L. Brooks Media Center, and “The Keith Burns Field” for the Parker-Gray Stadium field.

Superintendent Melanie Kay-Wyatt will create a timeline and plan for community engagement to consider each renaming request. It’s important to note that the board’s authorization to begin the process doesn’t commit them to renaming the facilities or using the proposed names.

The naming process follows Policy FFA, which lays out the steps for non-sponsored naming and renaming of school division facilities.

The board will ask for public input on the proposed names before making any final decisions. They’re encouraging community members to join upcoming engagement sessions and share their thoughts on the renaming proposals.

Besides the naming process, the board got updates on other projects, including the draft strategic plan for 2025-2030 and ongoing redistricting efforts.

The next regular School Board meeting is set for April 24, where they expect to hear more updates on these projects.
