Alexandria School Board members sternly responded to recent criticism leveled at the Board and school system staff.

Without singling out the offending School Board member by name, Board Chair Michelle Rief, Vice Chair Kelly Carmichael Booz and Member Christopher Harris on Thursday night admonished Board Member Abdel Elnoubi for his comments at a City Council candidate debate on Oct. 16.


It’s only getting more and more expensive to rent in Alexandria.

In a webinar this afternoon, Alexandria’s Office of Housing spelled out the current state of evictions. Given that the vast majority of those evictions are caused by non-payment of rent, Mary Horner, division chief of the Landlord Tenant Division, noted that rental costs are continuing to rise.


The Alexandria Police Department (APD) released body-worn camera footage (warning: the video contains strong language and graphic images) of an officer involved shooting where police shot and killed Paul Behan Jr. in the stairwell outside his apartment on Aug. 12.

The footage follows police responding to Behan’s apartment for a welfare check after a coworker warned that he was armed and experiencing a mental health crisis following trouble at work. Behan was a lead technician at a hospital in D.C.

Tomorrow (Friday) is the last day for Alexandrians to request a ballot by mail for the upcoming Nov. 5 general election.

According to the City of Alexandria website, applications must be received in the Voter Registration Office by 5 p.m. tomorrow.

☀️ Today’s weather: Expect sunny skies with a high near 66 degrees and a north wind blowing between 15 to 17 mph, gusting as high as 25 mph. Thursday night will be clear, with a low temperature around 41 degrees and a northwest wind at 6 to 8 mph.


Massage Heights will close in the Bradlee Shopping Center at the end of the month, and customers with gift cards will have to get them redeemed at their nearest location in Sea Girt, New Jersey.

Staff confirmed that the location at 3642 King Street is closing Oct. 28 (Monday). They also said that no more appointments are being made and that gift cards are non-refundable.


Alexandria has distributed over $440,000 to businesses around the city as part of a new grant program this year.

In a report to the City Council, city staff said the 2024 Small Business Resiliency (SBR) grant program is set to distribute $440,000 to local small businesses in the city in grants of up to $7,000.


Trinity United Methodist Church will celebrate a unique milestone next month — turning 250 years old.

The church pre-dates the United States by less than two years. On Nov. 20, 1774, teenage preacher William Duke spread the gospel to a small group in Old Town, planting a seed that would see thousands of congregants and result in the church as it stands today at 2911 Cameron Mills Road.


An Alexandria man will spend the next decade in federal prison for the sale of more than 4,000 fentanyl-laced pills.

Alhagi Gassim Conteh, 30, was sentenced yesterday (Tuesday) to 10 years behind bars in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia — the mandatory minimum sentence for conspiracy to distribute fentanyl, according to federal law.
