Smoother Streets Coming: Paving and street maintenance operations resume on April 21

Starting Monday, April 21, Alexandria’s Department of Transportation and Environmental Services is rolling out its annual street maintenance program.

The project, which runs through November 2025, aims to resurface about 50 lane miles of road each year and repair concrete curbs and gutters.

The City embraced spring cleaning in March and April with ‘Pothole Palooza’, street sweeping, and Gateway Cleaning.

The following streets are scheduled for resurfacing and repair during the initial phase of the program:

  • North Lee Street from King Street to Oronoco Street
  • Second Street from Colonial Avenue to North Fairfax Street
  • South Royal Street from Gibbon Street to Queen Street
  • Portner Place from Portner Road to the End
  • Boyle Street from Buchanan Street to the End
  • Adams Avenue from Newton Street to Mount Vernon Avenue
  • Newton Street from East Braddock Road to East Luray Avenue
  • Price Street from East Bellefonte Avenue to Cliff Street
  • West Windsor Avenue from Russell Road to Commonwealth Avenue
  • Mayer Place from Allison Street to the End
  • Eisenhower Avenue Concrete at Lake Cook Entrance
  • Duke Street from Roth Street to Wheeler Avenue
  • Metro Road from Eisenhower Avenue to South Van Dorn Street
  • Mill Road from Jamieson Avenue to Eisenhower Avenue
  • Oak Street from Mount Vernon Avenue to Russell Road (unpaved segments)

Residents will get a heads-up about work in their area through signs and door hangers. Keep an eye out for temporary “No Parking” signs to avoid tickets or towing.

Most paving happens between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m., but expect some night work on busier roads.

Alexandria maintains over 561 lane miles of roads, sidewalks, and alleys. The program also upgrades curb ramps to meet ADA standards.
