T.C.’s Wilmer Carranza Wins $250,000 Scholarship, Sets Eyes on Future

Wilmer Carranza hardly spoke a word of English when he moved back to Alexandria from El Salvador in 2009. Now the 17-year-old senior at T.C. Williams High School has a 3.999 grade point average, is a student representative on the Alexandria School Board and recently received a $250,000 scholarship to attend Lafayette College in northern Pennsylvania.

Carranza is the first member of his family to go to college and credits his success to his mother, friends and the Alexandria public school system.

Sen. Kaine to Bring T.C. Student to State of the Union

A T.C. Williams student and JROTC cadet will be attending tonight’s State of the Union address at the Capitol with Sen. Tim Kaine (D-Va.).

Kaine invited Nicole Rosario-Flores after meeting with cadets at the high school last month and discussing his bipartisan war powers resolution, intended to limit the president’s ability to deploy troops without Congress’ approval.

Donation Eliminates T.C. Williams High School Lunch Debt

Alexandria’s Jay and Arline Hoffman just donated $18,500 to wipe out school lunch debts for students at T.C. Williams High School and its Minnie Howard Campus.

“These kids can’t graduate unless these debts are paid,” Hoffman, the local developer behind Hoffman Town Center, told ALXnow. “Arline and I are blessed to be able to do it.”

Noah Lyles Named Top Athlete of Year by Track and Field News

For the second year in a row, Alexandria’s Noah Lyles has been named the top U.S. men’s athlete of the year by Track and Field News.

The outlet described the 2016 graduate as a “runaway choice for the top spot,” and said that Lyles received 22 of 31 top votes from an international panel.

Kaine at T.C. Williams: Soleimani Intel Fell “Far Short” of Imminent Threat

Sen. Tim Kaine (D-Va.) was careful with his words at T.C. Williams High School on Friday.

The lawmaker spoke for more than an hour to JROTC students about his war powers resolution, which would limit the president’s ability to strike against foreign countries without congressional approval. Kaine said that the Trump administration’s Jan. 3 assassination of Qasem Soleimani outside Baghdad International Airport was based on U.S. intelligence that fell “far short of what I view as an imminent threat.”

ACPS and T.C. Williams Need Less Leadership Turnover, Experts Say

Continuity of leadership will be crucial to the success of the future expansion of T.C. Williams High School’s connected high school network, according to a panel of national experts who spoke to more than 100 parents, educators and staff on Wednesday night.

The Alexandria City Public Schools system has seen much turnover over the last two decades, with six superintendents over the last 20 years and just as many principals at T.C.

The senator, who’s a member of the Armed Services and Foreign Relations Committees, “will talk to students about his efforts to more clearly define the roles of Congress and the President in making our nation’s most important decision – whether to send our servicemembers into harm’s way,” according to a media alert.
