A special use permit to allow for the operation of a new garden center in Del Ray is heading to City Council this Saturday (March 15).

Jay Portlance, owner of Del Ray Hardware (2003 Mount Vernon Avenue), wants to soon open the Del Ray Farmhouse Market and Garden right across the street at 1913 Mount Vernon Avenue.

Some big changes are being proposed at 400 King Street in Old Town.

The building takes over an entire city block and is currently home to The Alexandrian Old Town Hotel at 480 King Street and Southern restaurant King & Rye. The latter is undergoing an interior renovation and is serving a limited menu through the end of March.

After years in limbo, a parking lot along Alexandria’s waterfront could be turned into an outdoor dining area for a local restaurant.

Mai Thai (6 King Street) last month submitted a request to the city to license four city-owned spaces in the eight-space parking lot in the rear of the building.

The ye olde Taco Bell Cantina on King Street in the heart of Old Town (417 King Street) is set to get a new upgrade that could be getting a new pickup window for to-go orders.

The new plan proposes to add an aluminum framed “pick-up window” to the front of the store. The proposal is scheduled to head to the Board of Architectural Review on Wednesday, March 5.

Sake Express Japanese Hibachi opened earlier this week in Arlandria.

The new restaurant at 3827 Mount Vernon Avenue opened on Monday and is the latest spot for a local chain with three other locations, including Sake Japanese Steakhouse at 2016 Eisenhower Avenue.

Pizzeria Paradiso said ‘arrivederci‘ to Alexandria in 2020 — but that phrase means “until we meet again” and it could be fulfilled starting next month.

Pizzeria Paradiso announced that it will be returning as an “ongoing pizza pop up” in Hank’s Oyster Bar (818 N. St. Asaph Street) in Old Town North every Thursday-Sunday, starting March 13.

Department of Beer and Wine (DBW), a gourmet beer and wine shop in Potomac Yard, is moving to the Del Ray neighborhood.

In an email to DBW Wine Club members, the shop owners said they are moving to 2805 Mount Vernon Avenue. DBW will be moving into the location formerly occupied by the ASAP Printing and Mailing Company and will share the building with a Truist bank.

Eras, a Taylor Swift-themed popup bar, is opening next week on Mount Vernon Avenue in Del Ray.

While still under construction, owner Bill Blackburn said that each section of the seasonal popup at 2312 Mount Vernon Avenue represents one of Swift’s albums — Fearless, Speak Now, Red, 1989, Reputation and Folklore. There’s even a hall with portraits of her ex-boyfriends.

Five Del Ray businesses are shortlisted finalists for the neighborhood’s coveted Heart of Del Ray award to be given this Friday, Valentine’s Day.

A new breakfast spot in Del Ray stirred up a discussion at the Planning Commission on Tuesday about whether Alexandria has too many trailers.

The plan is to add a pair of trailers for the food truck French Toast to the lot behind 1506 Mount Vernon Avenue. It was docketed for the consent calendar, but Planning Commissioner Mindy Lyle said the trailers represent a negative trend taking place across city planning in Alexandria.
