The Alexandria Fire Department assisted in extinguishing two-alarm fires in Fairfax County this morning (July 23).

No injuries were reported in the early morning fires at three townhouses in Kingstowne and at Anytime Fitness (6400 Brandon Avenue) in Springfield’s Tower Shopping Center.

A 33-year-old man, formerly a resident of Alexandria, is being held without bond for multiple narcotics possession charges. The man was allegedly getting his drugs mailed to a local UPS Store.

There’s nothing like a good birthday cake, and on Friday (July 18), 24 cupcakes were delivered to make two-year-old Matilda feel special on the big day.

Natasha Gannon baked the cupcakes and delivered them to the United Community – Early Learning Center in the Alexandria area of Fairfax County. Since 2020, Gannon has baked upward of 50 cakes for the Northern Virginia chapter of Cake4Kids, which recently delivered its 10,000th cake to underserved youth.

The man charged in the June 10 fatal stabbing of 32-year-old Marvin Waters at a Huntington Metro station bus stop was living in a storage unit in Alexandria, according to the Alexandria Police Department.

Robert Andrew Reed was arrested on June 15 in the bus bay area of the Huntington Metro station.

Metro’s summer construction project kicked off over the weekend, temporarily shutting down rail service at two well-traveled stations in and around Alexandria for the next three weeks.

Metro shut down rail at the Van Dorn Street station in Alexandria and Franconia-Springfield station in Fairfax County until July 26. The Blue Line will end service at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport station for the duration of the project.

Alexandria Mayor Alyia Gaskins has endorsed Fairfax County Planning Commissioner Candice Bennett in the special election for Virginia’s open 11th Congressional District seat.

There are 10 Democrats and seven Republicans vying for the seat, following the death of U.S. Rep. Gerry Connolly in May. Both the 11th District Democratic Committee  and the 11th Congressional District Republican Committee have chosen Saturday, June 28, as the primary date to choose their respective candidates. The special election will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 9.

The Northern Virginia Juvenile Detention Center (NVJDC) is undertaking a multi-year series of capital improvements, in addition to becoming its own food authority.

Leaders running the facility at 200 S. Whiting Street say they’re gradually changing it from a traditional detention center to a more rehabilitative facility. Proposed changes for the jail that houses 10- to 18-year-old kids across Northern Virginia include creating a more cheerful entry area for families, replacing the 64-year-old concrete slab beds on which kids sleep, and modifying overhead lighting to improve sleep.

Northern Virginia is reportedly among the “five cities run by Democratic leaders” that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is preparing to deploy tactical units to, according to MSNBC.

Citing two unnamed sources “familiar with the planning of future ICE operations,” MSNBC reported that ICE is preparing to deploy tactical response teams in New York City, Seattle, Chicago, Philadelphia, and Northern Virginia.

After the drivers of a suspected stolen vehicle in Alexandria refused to stop late last night, a pursuit followed that ended in a crash and injuries in the Belle Haven area of Fairfax.

Virginia State Police (VSP) were assisting Alexandria Police with the stop of the suspected stolen vehicle, a Hyundai Elantra, near Duke and S. Van Dorn streets around 11 p.m.
