One person is dead after a fire at a homeless encampment near Holmes Run Park in Alexandria’s West End.

The Alexandria Fire Department discovered the fire under an overpass in the 4600 block of Duke Street, near the entrance to Holmes Run Park and the Shoppes at Foxchase. The Friday night fire was reported at around 10:45 p.m. by a resident in a nearby apartment building, according to AFD dispatches.

Traffic safety advocacy group Northern Virginia Families for Safe Streets (NoVA FSS) compiled crash data from 2021 to 2024 and put together a ranking of the city’s most dangerous corridors with one standing out in particular.

The ranking looks not at the number of crashes, but the number of total casualties — from visible and non-visible injuries to severe and fatal crashes — reported by the Virginia Department of Transportation.

The Alexandria Police Department apprehended a man wielding a knife and trying to board buses on Duke Street around 11:20 a.m. today.

Scanner traffic indicated the man attempted to a bus at the intersection of Duke Street and Jordan Street. The bus driver reportedly shut the door to keep him from entering the bus. The man reportedly tried to get onto another bus with the knife and the second driver did the same thing.

A few years after looking for grants to revitalize John Ewald Park (4452 Duke Street), Alexandria is starting to put together plans to fix the somewhat neglected park.

The park still sees active use for its open field and basketball court, but few would argue the park is on par with other outdoor recreation areas around the city. In a release, the city said it’s seeking community feedback on recommendations to improve Ewald Park.

Fast food is poised to get a little faster in Alexandria’s West End, as a new drive-thru is being proposed for a McDonald’s on Duke Street.

It’s not a big change, but the McDonald’s restaurant at 3510 Duke Street is asking the city to approve a special use permit to build a third drive-thru window with a canopy, as well as construction of a new sidewalk in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act.

An adult male suspected of a felony robbery in Arlington is in custody after allegedly crashing a stolen vehicle into several vehicles in the Wharf area in D.C., according to the Alexandria Police Department.

APD put out a release Friday detailing the incident. According to APD, a license plate reader flagged the car the suspect allegedly drove in Alexandria’s West End as stolen.

The Alexandria Police Department (APD) said Alexandria resident Earl Lucas was arrested after the man allegedly hit a teen with his car on Duke Street and fled the scene.

In a release, APD said officers responded to a report of a hit-and-run around 12:26 a.m. on Sunday, July 21, at the intersection of Duke and Jordan Streets. APD said a passing motorist’s dashcam helped police identify Lucas.

A 24/7 Pet ER facility operated by the Veterinary Emergency Group (VEG) is opening tomorrow (Wednesday) at the Shoppes of Foxchase shopping center.

The facility at 4525 Duke Street is scheduled to launch with an open house from 4:30-6:30 p.m. followed by a ribbon cutting.
