Alexandria’s Office of Housing is hosting a meeting Thursday (Oct. 24) afternoon to discuss the “Eviction Landscape in Alexandria.”
In the wake of the Covid pandemic, there was a sharp uptick in evictions in Alexandria as previous protections established at the start of the pandemic expired. The meeting on Thursday will look at eviction trends in the City and how eviction trends have continued over the last few years.

The Alexandria Police Department (APD) is warning residents against an all-too-familiar scam — callers pretending to be law enforcement calling to collect bills.

According to an alert system, the bridge will be opening tonight (Monday) at 10 p.m. to allow for the passage of the “Deep Playa Boat”. The opening should not last longer than 15-20 minutes, but there could be other openings due to scheduled maintenance later that night.

This year is particularly painful and sad as we think about the recent death of a 13-year-old Frost middle school student who was struck and killed by a person driving a truck on Pickett Road. We will also honor the nearly 30 other people (as of today’s date) who have been killed on Northern Virginia streets while, walking, biking, or rolling since last year’s day of remembrance.

The Alexandria Police Department says that the shooting death of a 23-year-old resident Saturday night (Oct. 19) is a homicide, and released the identity of the victim.
Carl Harris was found in a parking lot of an apartment building in the 800 block of Manor Road just before 8 p.m. He was put into an SUV and driven to Inova Alexandria Hospital, but was dead on arrival, according to police dispatches.
Another busy week in Alexandria, this one with a clash between Alexandria City High School’s Theogony student newspaper and school administration at the forefront.
The opening of the Minnie Howard campus as a second location for Alexandria City High School created a situation where, between classes, students may have to take a bus to get from one campus to the other. After weeks of reporting on transportation frustrations of students struggling to get between the new Alexandria City High School campuses, the Theogony editors wrote a scathing condemnation of the current transportation setup:
Sen. Tim Kaine (D) paid a visit to Cameron Cafe in Cameron Station yesterday for a talk with local business owners and local leaders.
City Council member Canek Aguirre, who also attended the meeting, said conversations focused on the diverse businesses throughout Alexandria’s West End. While much of the public attention focuses on Del Ray and Old Town, Alexandria’s West End is home to an eclectic range of businesses, from an acclaimed Ethiopian restaurant to an indoor climbing gym.
