Anyone out celebrating Halloween this weekend should remember: the Nonprofit Washington Regional Alcohol Program (WRAP) is sponsoring free Lyft rides to prevent drunk driving.
According to a release:
Preparing to combat that time of year when, according to the National Traffic Safety Administration, more than one-third (39%) of U.S. traffic deaths involve drunk drivers, a local nonprofit organization announced today that free safe rides will be offered to would-be drunk drivers throughout the Washington-metropolitan area during this weekend’s Halloween celebrations.
Offered by the nonprofit Washington Regional Alcohol Program (WRAP), the 2024 Halloween SoberRide® program will be in operation beginning at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 26 and operate until 4:00 a.m. on Sunday, October 27th as a way to keep local roads safe from impaired drivers during this traditionally high-risk period.
During this time, residents 21 or older can use the Lyft app and enter the SoberRide code on the payment page (under “Add Lyft Pass”). The program will offer up to $15 off of rides.
Last year, 1,321 people in the region used the program on Halloween, a record for the holiday since the service started in 1991.
The code will be posted at 3 p.m. on Saturday at SoberRide.
“Well over a third of U.S. traffic fatalities during Halloween involve drunk drivers according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration,” said Kurt Erickson, WRAP’s President. “Halloween is of particular concern for younger drivers as NHTSA data shows that 54-percent of drunk driving crashes on U.S. roadways during the holiday period involved drivers ages 21 to 34.”
