Governor Youngkin continues Alexandria appointments with three more state board selections

Governor Glenn Youngkin announced Friday (July 18) that three more Alexandria residents have been selected for state board positions, continuing a notable trend of Northern Virginia appointments that has seen at least 14 Alexandria locals named to state roles in recent weeks.

The latest appointees include Scott Kopple, Senior Director of Government Relations at BWX Technologies, Inc., who will serve on the Virginia Nuclear Energy Consortium Authority. BWX Technologies is a major supplier of nuclear components and fuel to U.S. Navy and commercial nuclear power programs.

Four Mile Run Kayak Launch opening delayed to mid-September

The opening date of the Four Mile Run Kayak Launch has been pushed back two months, according to the city.

Alexandria listed July 19 (Saturday) as the completion date, although weather conditions over the summer and “recurring tidal inundations” have pushed that date to mid-September, according to the city.

Alexandria to honor centenarians at special September celebration

The City of Alexandria is calling on residents to help identify and celebrate community members who have reached the remarkable milestone of 100 years or more.

The City of Alexandria and the Successful Aging Committee will host a Centenarian Celebration on Tuesday, September 9, from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m. at Alexandria City Hall, located in the Vola Lawson Lobby at 301 King Street. The in-person event will honor Alexandrians who have lived a century or longer.

Petition launched against pump station construction at Waterfront Park

A new petition has been launched against part of Alexandria’s plan to combat flooding in Old Town.

The Change.org petition opposing the installation of a two-story pump station at Waterfront Park to recirculate floodwaters back to the Potomac River has garnered 275 signatures so far. The organizer wrote in the petition that the pump station “is destructive, unnecessary, wasteful, and in violation of public trust.”

After recent 10,000th cake milestone, Alexandria-area Cake4Kids continues sweet mission

There’s nothing like a good birthday cake, and on Friday (July 18), 24 cupcakes were delivered to make two-year-old Matilda feel special on the big day.

Natasha Gannon baked the cupcakes and delivered them to the United Community – Early Learning Center in the Alexandria area of Fairfax County. Since 2020, Gannon has baked upward of 50 cakes for the Northern Virginia chapter of Cake4Kids, which recently delivered its 10,000th cake to underserved youth.

Corcoran McEnearney has appointed Evan Lacopo as Managing Broker of its Alexandria office, which the company says is the top-performing residential real estate office in Alexandria by sales volume.

The appointment, announced Thursday (July 18), brings a seasoned luxury real estate leader to the role. Lacopo previously held leadership positions at TTR Sotheby’s International Realty and Douglas Elliman Metro DC.

Northern Virginia Transportation Commission backs regional transit funding plan

The Northern Virginia Transportation Commission endorsed a multi-billion-dollar regional transit funding proposal Thursday, even as Virginia faces a $153 million shortfall in its share of the plan.

NVTC’s Resolution #2571 supports the DMVMoves initiative’s proposed $500-600 million annual funding program starting in fiscal year 2028. The plan would fund Metro infrastructure improvements and establish a regional bus priority program serving Alexandria and other jurisdictions.

Hundreds rallied and marched against the Trump administration in Old Town on Thursday night (July 17).

The event at Judy Guse-Noritake Park (600 N. Henry Street) joined hundreds of Good Trouble Lives On rallies across the country, commemorating the fifth anniversary of the death of Congressman John Lewis (D-GA), with participants holding signs and speaking against the Trump administration. The civil rights icon was renowned for his legacy of nonviolent action in defense of democracy.
