On This Day in Alexandria History — “On Nov. 6, 1944, ground was broken for construction of the Alexandria Health Center in the 500 block of N. St. Asaph Street. Before this facility was built, local health department staff worked in basement offices at City Hall. The Health Department moved to the West End in 2004.” [Historic Alexandria]

Freedom House Museum Reopens Today — “The process of rehabilitating the exterior of the Freedom House Museum at 1315 Duke Street began in June of 2024. Now the front facade has returned to its pre-Civil War appearance, helping to tell the story of the domestic slave trade in Alexandria. The next phase at Freedom House Museum shifts to the inside where engineers and preservation specialists will design ways to make the interior spaces accessible to all.” [City of Alexandria]

NJ Governor-Elect Holds ALX Ties — “Virginia elected its first female governor Tuesday, but another race also had ties to our region. Mikie Sherrill was elected to be New Jersey’s next governor, and she was born right in Northern Virginia. Sherrill, a Democrat, defeated Republican candidate Jack Ciattarelli to succeed current New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy. Sherrill was born in Alexandria in 1972 and grew up in NoVA.” She also shared a D.C. apartment with Governor-elect Abigail Spanberger while the two women served in Congress. CIP Budget Proposal at School Board Tonight — “The Superintendent will present the recommended Capital Improvement Program (CIP) Budget for FY 2027-2036. The Superintendent has prepared a CIP budget that responds to City guidance while prioritizing as many needs as possible in accordance with the FY2027 Budget Priorities.” [ACPS]

DASH Taking Board of Director Applications —“Interested applicants are encouraged to submit their materials as soon as possible our online application form. Candidates must have public transportation expertise or management experience (e.g., transit agency executive, transit trade association member, familiarity with transportation regulations).” The deadline to apply is 5 p.m. Monday, Dec. 1. Olde Towne School for Dogs to Celebrate 50 Years — “With hopes for continued success over ‘the next 50 years’ of canine caring, grooming, and training, the Olde Towne School for Dogs is hosting a 50th Anniversary Celebration sidewalk party this Saturday, Nov. 8, featuring foods and treats for their doggie guests and their two-legged companions. It’s Thursday — Expect sunny skies and a high of around 57 degrees, accompanied by a northwest wind blowing at 8 to 11 mph and gusts reaching up to 22 mph.
