ALXnow had another slightly shortened week thanks to Fourth of July celebrations.

The big news this week is the GenOn Power Plant redevelopment plans moving forward despite pushback from local tenants and worker unions and the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority (MWAA).


Alexandria’s Del Ray neighborhood celebrated red, white and blue on First Thursday (July 7).

The evening included live music at Pat Miller Neighborhood Square (at Oxford and Mount Vernon Avenues) with bands, cake pops and the annual Pork Barrel Watermelon Seed-Spitting Contest.


(Updated at 4 p.m. on July 9) Alexandria Police are investigating a shots fired incident in the Braddock neighborhood last night that left a man hospitalized.

The incident occurred sometime after 9 p.m. last night (Tuesday). Police said a man was transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Connecticut-based pizza shop Frank Pepe Pizzeria Napoletana — aka Pepe’s Pizza — is planning to open in the Alexandria Commons Shopping Center (3231 Duke Street) next week.

The pizzeria announced in a release that the Alexandria location, the second in the region after one in Bethesda, Maryland, will open on Monday, July 18.


A 21-year-old Alexandria man was sentenced to 20 years in prison for the Sept. 30, 2020, murder of John Pope in the West End.

On June 30, Tavon Marquis Lanier was sentenced to 73 years in prison — with all but 20 years suspended — for his convictions of second-degree murder, two counts of using a firearm in commission of a felony, grand larceny and being a felon in possession of a firearm.


The Alexandria Community Policing Review Board should be up and running by September — just in time to turn in a written report to City Council on its activities, according to Board members.

The seven-person Board was created by City Council last year to independently review allegations of police misconduct, and its effectiveness is based on Members receiving extensive training, as well as the hiring of an independent auditor/investigator to hire staff, conduct investigations and coordinate the Board’s administrative functions.


Avis is full of energy, and looking for a new yard to run around in. The two-year-old female hound mix is up for adoption with the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria.

“Avis gets so excited when she sees her human friends that she can’t stop her tail from wagging,” AWLA spokesperson Gina Hardter said. “Avis thinks anywhere is appropriate for snuggling, from the yard to her bed.”
