Think about getting comfortable, because there’s a silent reading party happening in Old Town North later this month.

The realm of the imagination is the destination for participants in the latest venture between Old Town Books (130 S. Royal Street) and Hotel AKA Alexandria (625 First Street). From 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Aug. 24, you can finally get the peace and quiet needed to move the bookmark along and find out who did the deed in that Agatha Christie murder mystery.


The badly cracked and damaged tennis courts at Potomac Yard Park are being closed for repairs starting on Friday, Aug. 16.

The two tennis courts in the park are in rough shape, with ruptures running the length of the asphalt. The Department of Recreation, Parks & Cultural Activities said in a release that the courts will be closed from Friday, Aug. 16, through Saturday, Aug. 31, for repairs.

The Alexandria Police Department said in a release that on Monday, Aug. 12, officers fatally shot a man in a stairwell of an apartment building just off I-395.

According to the release:


The City of Alexandria is celebrating the ten year anniversary of the Contrabands and Freedmen Cemetery Memorial (1001 S. Washington Street) next month, a monument commemorating a chapter in Alexandria’s history that’s both harrowing and inspiring.

The memorial honors the hundreds of Black Americans who died in Alexandria during the Civil War.


A cyclist sustained a non-life threatening injury after being struck by a Metro Bus at a busy Alexandria intersection on Sunday afternoon.

The incident occurred at around 4 p.m. in the area of King Street and S. Walter Reed Drive, according to the police scanner. The area is west of the ramps to Interstate 395.


Anybody traveling along N. Washington Street might notice that the historic Lee-Fendall House Museum & Garden (614 Oronoco Street) looks different.

The historic 18th-century home, celebrating 50 years as a public museum, has a fresh coat of paint as part of a renovation project to freshen up the building.


An Alexandria middle school got a boost from the United Way of the National Capital Area with the donation of backpacks and school supplies.

Francis C. Hammond Middle School (4646 Seminary Road) joined six other Title I schools in receiving the backpacks, which were filled with grade-appropriate school supplies.
