Governor Glenn Youngkin’s recently failed attempt to withdraw Virginia from the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI) is “reckless,” says Alexandria Mayor Justin Wilson.

Wilson, in his December newsletter, said that Youngkin’s efforts are bad for the environment and remove a “vital funding source” for localities in fighting flooding and severe weather.

Baku Delicious, a Fairfax cafe and bakery specializing in Azerbaijani cuisine, is opening a new location at 711 Pendleton Street next year.

Owner Sevda Tahirli filed a permit with the City of Alexandria to open an “art cafe, serving freshly baked pastries, coffee and teas.”

🌦️ Today’s weather: Scattered rain and snow showers will occur before 9am, followed by a slight chance of snow showers until noon. The sky will be mostly cloudy, eventually becoming sunnier, as the temperature drops to around 32 by 5pm. Strong west winds of 17 to 22 mph with gusts up to 49 mph are expected, with a 30% chance of precipitation. Thursday night will be clear, with a low of 27 and west winds of 14 to 16 mph, gusting up to 24 mph.


Getting $500 a month from Alexandria with no strings attached is nice, but participants in the city’s guaranteed basic income pilot say things are still tough.

The news comes from a new report and brief on the impact of the first year of the city’s two-year Recurring Income for Success and Equity (ARISE) program.


Despite concerns raised by families of residents at Silverado Memory Care (2807 King Street), Alexandria’s Planning Commission recommended approval of a change that will let facility substantially increase (item 7) its number of residents without expanding the facility.

The plan is to increase beds on the site from 66 to 90 without any building expansion by shifting to an increased number of “companion rooms” — rooms with two residents. Loren Shook , co-founder of Silverado Memory Care, said that 80% of rooms in most facilities are companion rooms.


This weekend is the Scottish Christmas Walk Parade and Holiday Boat Parade of Lights in Alexandria. The two events are always a hoot, but it comes with a series of road closures to be mindful of.

The City of Alexandria said the Scottish Christmas Walk Parade will kick off at S. St. Asaph and Wolfe Streets at 11 a.m. and will conclude at Market Square around 1 p.m.
