Three prominent Alexandria Democratic politicians threw their hats in the ring for reelection on Tuesday night (Jan. 7).

Delegate Elizabeth Bennett-Parker (D-5th), Sheriff Sean Casey and Commonwealth’s Attorney Bryan Porter announced their intentions to run for reelection at a virtual meeting of the Alexandria Democratic Committee. The meeting was supposed to be held at Alexandria City High School, but went virtual because of this week’s snowstorm.


Update 1/9 — The Health Department is postponing the event to Saturday, Jan. 18, from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. due to impending snow on Saturday

The Alexandria Health Department is hosting a “Walk & Talkthis weekend in the Braddock neighborhood to talk about health issues in the community.


Alexandria’s Pat Malone will stand up to cancer for 24 hours straight on Feb. 10 for his 11th annual Stand Up To Cancer fundraising event.

The 67-year-old Malone suffers from hereditary spastic paraplegia, making those last hours of standing very painful, he tells ALXnow.

While most of the streets in Alexandria are relatively clear of snow, Alexandria City Public Schools announced that schools and offices will switch to asynchronous instruction tomorrow (Wednesday).

Superintendent Melanie Kay-Wyatt said the announcement is the result of concerns about safety for staff and students.


Alexandria’s animal shelter is launching a brand new Alexandria Animal Academy, aimed at providing a cost-effective option for helping with dog behavior and training courses.

The program is now enrolling with classes starting Sunday, Jan. 12.

Sheila is the owner of not only the only hat store in Alexandria (2400 Mount Vernon Avenue in Del Ray), but throughout Northern Virginia. There’s a hat kiosk at the Pentagon City Mall and a Hats In The Belfry in Baltimore, but that’s it for hat stores in this area.


The snow has cleared up and it’s sunny today, with sunny/partly cloudy conditions for the rest of the week until Friday night and Saturday morning, when it’s expected to snow again.

There’s a 70% chance for snow on Friday night, down to 40% on Saturday morning.


A snow day yesterday forced the Alexandria School Board to make its induction ceremony virtual, something School Board Chair Michelle Rief said typifies the way the Board has to adapt to crises.

“I’m disappointed it has to be virtual, but to new members it’s a befitting introduction to the life of a School Board member,” Rief said. “We often have to roll with the punches and have a Plan B.”
