Alexandria’s City Hall grows 26% in new development plans

The preliminary development site plan for the renovation of Alexandria’s City Hall, Market Square Plaza, and underground parking garage is heading to the Planning Commission.

The city wants to increase the gross floor area at City Hall from an existing 122,171 square feet to 153,332 square feet (a 26% expansion), while maintaining the size of Market Square plaza at 2,975 square feet and the 234-space parking garage at 91,562 square feet.

Plans by architect Leo A. Daly show a completely renovated building at 301 King Street, a rebuilt underground parking garage, a new Market Square plaza, and streetscape improvements.

The Planning Commission will review the proposal on Monday, June 23, followed by a review by the City Council in July. The city aims to start construction next year and complete it by 2028.

Throughout the development, the City Council and the city government will conduct business work at the Redella S. “Del” Pepper Community Resource Center (4850 Mark Center Drive).
