Cornerstone Craftsman, a local non-profit that provides local teens with instruction, tools and mentoring to work in skilled trades, is hosting a grand opening for a new facility on Eisenhower Avenue next month.

The new location is at 2111 Eisenhower Avenue. The grand opening is scheduled for noon on Feb. 28.

A faulty point of sale (POS) system is the cause of the November fire that destroyed three businesses in the heart of Old Town, one of the business owner’s tells ALXnow.

No one was injured in the Nov. 17 blaze at 103. S. St. Asaph Street, but it shut down three local businesses — Friends to Lovers Bookstore, Madam Coco — Emporium and Everything Chocolate and the Little Birdies kids boutique.


It’s Christmas for local government nerds: the annual City of Alexandria budget is almost upon us.

Alexandria said in a release that budget season is set to kick off on Tuesday, Feb. 25 with a presentation to Alexandria’s City Council.


Monday marks Martin Luther King, Jr. Day and, with it, there are several holiday closures planned around the city.

All City offices and Alexandria City Public Schools will be closed on Monday, as well the local courts.

Tonight, flurries will clear up before 9pm and give way to a mostly clear sky, with temperatures dropping to around 19 degrees. The northwest wind will persist at 13 to 15 mph, while gusts may reach 30 mph.


Early morning travelers take heed: the Woodrow Wilson Bridge will be opening around 4:45 a.m. tomorrow (Tuesday) morning.

The bridge opening is scheduled to take place before scheduled maintenance openings and will last for 15-20 minutes, according to the City of Alexandria.


Public school students across Virginia would soon be getting free breakfasts under a newly proposed bill by Del. Elizabeth Bennett-Parker (D-5) and Sen. Danica Roem (D-30).

Bennett-Parker and Roem unsuccessfully tried to get free breakfast and lunch approved for students in the General Assembly’s 2024 session. With a $172 million pricetag, Bennett-Parker’s bill never made it out of the House Appropriations Committee.


City staff have signed off on a California-based yoga chain’s request to partially demolish a 90-foot section at the front of a historic building on King Street in Old Town.

Alo Yoga is asking the city to grant a certificate of appropriateness and permit to partially demolish the wall and replace it with glass panel and two French doors at 814 King Street — the current location of the Random Harvest furniture store.
