Old Town edges Del Ray 24-23 in annual softball battle

The John Porter Cup is back in Old Town.

Old Town’s business community defeated Del Ray 24-23 in their seventh annual five-inning softball game at Eugene Simpson Park (426 E. Monroe Avenue). The win put an end to Del Ray’s three-year streak.

“Today, I consider myself the luckiest man on the face of the earth,” said Old Town team captain Trae Lamond, owner of Chadwicks.

Del Ray team captain Bill Blackburn of the Homegrown Restaurant Group said that Lamond shouldn’t get too comfortable with the trophy, which is named after the former longtime principal of Alexandria City High School.

“One of the most difficult things to do in sports is to win four in a row,” Blackburn said. “Trae and his team were the best team last night, but I hope he doesn’t get too comfortable with the Porter Cup on the back bar at Chadwicks. It’s coming back to Del Ray soon.”

Lamond congratulated his opponents on a well-played game.

“Bill and his Del Ray crew played one hell of a game, but the Porter Cup is back where it belongs in Old Town,” Lamond said. “Thanks to all the volunteers who helped put this event together. I look forward to repeating next year.”
