More than 2,300 Dominion Energy customers in Alexandria will wake up on Friday (June 20) without power.

The outage comes following a severe thunderstorm that hit the area just after 4 p.m. on Thursday, bringing heavy rain and high winds to the area. 8,894 of Dominion Energy’s 70,325 customers in Alexandria were without power around 5:30 p.m. on Thursday.


More than 8,800 Dominion Energy customers in Alexandria are experiencing a power outage Thursday (June 19).

The outage comes following a severe thunderstorm that hit the area just after 4 p.m. on Thursday, bringing heavy rain and high winds to the area.


Alexandria and surrounding areas are under a Flood Watch from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. today (Thursday, June 19), as the National Weather Service warns of potential flash flooding due to anticipated heavy rainfall.

Residents should prepare for potential flooding and possible inundation in low-lying and urban areas, with localized rainfall totals of 2 to 3 inches possible.


Alexandria’s Waterfront Commission is gearing up for its yearly walking tour of the Old Town North waterfront on Saturday (June 21). This two-hour public event will showcase recent developments and ongoing projects along the Potomac River.

The tour kicks off at 8 a.m. from Oronoco Bay Park, covering key spots like Canal Center, the new TideLock project, and the Potomac River Generating Station redevelopment site.


The Del Ray Citizens Association (DRCA) is hosting a Historic Preservation Workshop on Saturday (June 21) from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Mt. Vernon Community School auditorium.

This workshop aims to educate the community and explore ways to protect the Town of Potomac Historic District. There is also talk of possibly creating a new, larger district that would encompass the rest of Del Ray.

Due to inclement weather, Alexandria’s Department of Recreation, Parks, and Cultural Activities (RPCA) has been forced to cancel Wednesday’s (June 18) Community Cookout at the Patrick Henry Rec. Center (4643 Taney Ave.).

Celebrating its 18th Annual Community Cookout Series, this marks the fourth time this year that RPCA has had to cancel a cookout due to weather. With free food, games, and more, the annual series of cookouts began in late April, aiming to connect residents with their city government and leaders.

Alexandria School Board Chair Michelle Rief responded today to the stinging letter from the PTSA of Alexandria City High School laying out “serious concerns” with Superintendent Melanie Kay-Wyatt and the school system’s central office.

While not naming Kay-Wyatt in the June 18 response, Rief wrote that the PTSA’s letter “rightly calls out the challenges that turnover can cause,” but listed several highlights from the school over the past year for context.

The Department of Junking offers customers a complimentary consultation on transitioning their old furniture into the secondhand market, thereby diverting it from landfills.


Alexandria City Council deferred a decision to extend the development special use permit (DSUP) for a seven-story, 180-unit mixed-use apartment building across the street from the Braddock Road Metro station.

The Council, last Saturday, unanimously extended the DSUP for the one-acre project at 727 N. West Street until its public hearing on October 18 (Saturday), giving developer West Street Acquisitions a few months to discuss stormwater issues with the city and conduct more community conversations with neighbors.
