
Early voting for November’s general election starts on Friday, Sept. 19, across Virginia. Here’s what you need to know in Alexandria.
Early voting starts 45 days before election day, and the only contested elections voters can decide on in Alexandria are for the Virginia governor, lieutenant governor, and attorney general.
Early in-person votes can be cast at the city registrar’s office at 132 S. Royal Street, which is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Friday, except for Indigenous Peoples’ Day on Monday, Oct. 13. Additionally, the weekend schedule for voting at the registrar’s office is below.

Early in-person votes can also be cast at Charles Beatley, Jr. Central Library (5005 Duke Street) starting on Friday, Oct. 24. The full early voting schedule at the library is below.

The Candidates
The candidates in the contested races are below.
- For governor, Democratic former Congresswoman Abigail Spanberger (D-7th) faces Republican Lieutenant Governor Winsome Earle-Sears
- For lieutenant governor, Democratic State Sen. Ghazala F. Hashmi (D-15th) faces Republican broadcaster John J. Reid, II
- For attorney general, incumbent Republican Attorney General Jason Miyares faces Democratic former Del. Jay Jones (D-89th)
Facing no opposition this cycle are Commonwealth’s Attorney Bryan Porter and Sheriff Sean Casey, as well as the city’s representatives in the House of Delegates — Alfonso Lopez (D-3rd), Virginia House Majority Leader Charniele Herring (D-4th), and Elizabeth Bennett-Parker (D-5th).
Mail-in ballots
The deadline to request a mail-in ballot is Friday, Oct. 14. Voters can request a ballot via the Virginia Department of Elections website.
Voters will need to know the following:
- Apply online through the Department of Elections website. You will need your social security number and a Virginia Driver’s license or Virginia DMV-issued ID number. Or;

Applications must be received at the Voter Registration Office by this time. You can check to see the status of your application and ballot on the Virginia Department of Elections website
- Your ballot envelope must be postmarked (or dated by commercial delivery service) before 7 p.m. on Election day AND received by the Officer of Voter Registrations & Elections by 12 noon the Friday after the election.
Election day is Tuesday, Nov. 4.
