An Alexandria woman who worked as a political campaign treasurer for more than two decades has pleaded guilty to embezzling campaign contributions and committing tax evasion, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Virginia.

Katherine Margaret Buchanan, 59, of Alexandria, admitted in federal court Monday to misappropriating at least $840,006.98 in contributed funds from various campaign committees and political action committees where she served as treasurer between 2020 and 2024.


Metro service in Alexandria is set for significant changes this summer, with Blue Line closures and bus route updates scheduled to begin in July.

The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) is closing parts of the Blue Line from July 5 to July 26, 2025, for essential construction and rehabilitation work.


Congressman Don Beyer (D-VA) has announced that he is seeking reelection as U.S. Representative for Virginia’s 8th Congressional District, which includes Alexandria.

Beyer, who turned 75 on June 20, has been reelected five times to represent the district, serving since January 2015.


A request to name a new street after former President Dwight D. Eisenhower’s childhood hometown in Kansas is heading to the Planning Commission tonight (June 23).

The new street name, Abilene Street, has been proposed for a new roadway that would run perpendicular to Eisenhower Avenue. It’s all part of the residential conversion approved last year for the former Victory Center property at 5001 Eisenhower Avenue.


So much for sinking local politicians with perfectly thrown baseballs at the bullseye of the dunking tank, because the annual Rosemont 4th of July has been canceled for the second straight year.

The closure isn’t due to the heat. For decades, the festivities have been held in the playground and athletic fields of Naomi L. Brooks Elementary School (600 Russell Road). They were held off last year due to a window replacement project. That work will continue this summer, as will the library renovations.


A joint meeting between the Alexandria City Council and School Board members scheduled for Monday evening was abruptly canceled due to mechanical problems at the ACPS Central Office building.

The City of Alexandria announced the cancellation Monday afternoon, citing “issues with the HVAC system” at the Alexandria City Public Schools headquarters where the 5 p.m. subcommittee meeting was set to take place.


D.C. news channel FOX5 is bringing its Zip Trip program to Alexandria’s Carlyle neighborhood on Friday (June 27).

Zip Trip is a program that tours locations around the region every Friday over the summer to highlight community activities and the people who make the town. The program is set to run from 7-11 a.m. at John Carlyle Square Park (825 John Carlyle Street).


Shake Shack is cooking up plans to open in a former bank in Old Town.

The burger chain filed permit requests to open at the former Burke and Herbert Bank at 621 King Street last December. Shake Shack now seeks approval for new signage and has included a new rendering of the building exterior (see below) in their application heading to the Board of Architectural Review.

The Northern Virginia Juvenile Detention Center (NVJDC) is undertaking a multi-year series of capital improvements, in addition to becoming its own food authority.

Leaders running the facility at 200 S. Whiting Street say they’re gradually changing it from a traditional detention center to a more rehabilitative facility. Proposed changes for the jail that houses 10- to 18-year-old kids across Northern Virginia include creating a more cheerful entry area for families, replacing the 64-year-old concrete slab beds on which kids sleep, and modifying overhead lighting to improve sleep.
